Every year, Creative Works Conference introduces a central theme to guide conversations, challenge assumptions, and help creatives see themselves as something more than service providers. In 2017, that theme was Creatives Are Dangerous. It was a rallying cry to reframe creative work as a force powerful enough to disrupt systems, start movements, and shift culture.
The theme was woven into every part of the conference experience—from the opening remarks to the speaker lineup, workshops, merch, and printed materials. It reminded attendees that the ability to think differently, ask questions, and create from a place of conviction is not just useful—it’s essential. In a city like Memphis, where challenges are real and resources are limited, creativity becomes more than a profession. It becomes a tool for progress. A threat to the status quo. A risk worth taking.
The Creatives Are Dangerous theme sparked something bold in our community. It gave attendees language and confidence to see their work differently—and themselves as part of something bigger. Something disruptive. Something dangerous.
